Handy Hints & General Wood Heating Techniques
Firing a Tulikivi is not hard, but then again, it will not run off a remote control that will command the TV, Radio and the fireplace all from the ease of your chair. But that's the idea!

Always check to see that the main damper, ash door damper and over fired air door control, is open before starting your fire.

A Tulikiv's Fire should be accomplished with one to two firebox loads of brisk burning. Do not burn your Tulikivi like a wood stove where you have the glass door cracked open and adding one or two sticks at a time as in a metal or cast-iron wood stove. This will cause soot to build up, draft problems. escape of unburned gases, and generally lower performance.

The best way to heat a Tulikivi is to fill it up only twice with firewood. The rule of thumb is .8 pounds of wood per 100 pounds of soapstone, and your wood can be weighed on a common bathroom scale.

Some people will prefer starting the heater one a day with a double firing. This will generally involve a burn time of about 3 hrs. Otherwise, the loads should be burned 8 to 12 hours apart.
